Teaching and learning

Teaching and learning on the MSc in International Management

You will be given reading lists for each module, and you will be expected to undertake your own independent study to supplement the material covered in the formal teaching activities. You will also have to complete a research proposal, and then complete an independent research project during the summer months.

Seminar

Lectures and seminars

Formal teaching is delivered though lectures and small group seminars. The seminars provide a forum for students to discuss with their tutors and fellow students any problems they have encountered during their own independent reading, and an opportunity to consider in more depth the issues raised within lectures. All students are expected to prepare for these seminars in advance, and to participate actively in the discussions.

Group presentations

On some modules, you will be required to prepare presentations with some of your classmates, and these presentations will be part of the formal assessment for the modules. Group presentations encourage effective teamwork, and also develop students’ abilities to articulate their ideas clearly and to identify the most important issues. Such skills will be of great importance in your future post-university careers.

Research methods

The three main objectives of the core Research Methods module are:

  1. To familiarise students with a range of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
  2. To allow students to critique in a constructive way the methodologies used in published research studies, and so identify possible weaknesses in the research findings.
  3. To equip students with the research skills needed to undertake their research projects during the summer term.

Research project

The research project will involve independent study as each students will be given a different topic. This element of the MSc is designed to test students’ skills in finding and bringing together different types of information from a variety of sources, evaluating and condensing this information, and preparing a succinct and focused report.
