The National Development and Reform Commission of the People’s Republic of China visited Sussex scholars Prof Constantin Blome (Professor of Operations Management, BMEc) and Dr Kamala Dawar (Lecturer in Commercial Law, LPS) in February on a fact-finding mission to inform Green Public Procurement and Public Participation initiatives.

In addition to the visit to Sussex, the Chinese delegation also visited the UK Cabinet Office, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment in Berlin, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Economic and Social Council.

A major aim of the mission is to learn from Green Public Procurement initiatives and regulation in Europe. Reflecting both the growing consideration given by the Chinese government to greening the Chinese economy, and the significant value of public procurement in China at approximately US$180bn, this consultation critically examined several European case studies.

Based on the evident success of this meeting, further consultations will follow.
