A taste of four students’ homes

Four students will be joining SussexFood on stage next Monday (10 March) at a live cooking event to share their dishes with a hungry One World Week audience.

SussexFood have announced the student recipes that Head Chef Justin will be cooking live at the free event, A Taste of Home.

"After being inundated with recipes from a very passionate 'foodie' student population, we made our decisions on recipes that clearly came from the heart," they say.

The first recipe, from a Media masters student, is Spiced Chocolate Chicken Curry. Chef Justin said he had to choose this one from the recipe's opening line alone. "It began, 'Sorry if the recipe sounds too, well, weird.' Brilliant."

Second is Lentil Stuffed Peppers with a Goat’s Cheese Topping. The recipe came with a wonderful description of vegan/vegetarian home-upbringing and included insights into the dish’s healthy benefits.

The third-year Law undergraduate who came up with the recipe told SussexFood: “Using peppers to contain the lentils is beneficial as peppers (and in particular red peppers) have a high vitamin C content, which in turn enables the body to absorb the iron content from the lentils.”

To add another vegetarian option - that would be inclusive to everyone at the event -SussexFood will also be preparing hummus infused with truffle oil, donated by the president of the Sussex Foodie society.

Lastly, SussexFood will be cooking Sweet Potato and Prawns Curry, which has a distinctive Caribbean feel. "We chose this to make sure the recipes spanned the width of globe, giving us a dish from the Americas to compliment the Asian and European flavours above."

Justin met with the students today (Friday) to discuss their recipes more in-depth. At the event on Monday, the students will join Justin on stage to participate in the cooking - and to make sure he does it right!
