University lecturers confirmed for panel of student 'Dragon's Den' competition
A businessman and a food psychology expert have been selected as judges for a 'Dragon's Den'-style entrepreneurial competition run by SussexFood.
Professor Martin Yeomans, an experimental psychologist with expertise in the human appetite, and Mark Fisher, a business expert and tutorial fellow in the School of Business, Management and Economics (BMEc), have agreed to be on the panel of judges for SussexFood’s competition, Idea Works.
Students are invited to pitch a food-related business idea to the panel, following a similar format to the hit BBC TV show 'Dragon's Den'.
These 'dragons' will test and probe the student innovators for validity, profitably and sustainability of their ideas and ultimately decide who will win the £1,000 prize.
The panel members were approached due to their wealth of knowledge and experience.
Martin’s work in experimental psychology has produced high-value research into appetite. His current team is working with the food industry to develop products that maximize satiety (the absence of hunger) and help consumers to control their food intake.
Mark has business experience in a number of sectors including accountancy, IT and the non-profit sector. Currently the Director of Student Experience in BMEc, Mark is focused on developing employability-related skills.
Amy Smith, SussexFood director, says: “We are thrilled that these prestigious academics are involved with the competition. Their food and business expertise will only enhance the student experience. The winner will gain great kudos as their idea will have to impress these two."
Students wishing to impress Martin and Mark need to conceive a food-related business idea and submit a brief business plan at the online portal. Students should submit their entries before the 5pm deadline on Friday 4 April.
A live final with the panel is scheduled for Thursday 10 April.
For students who have any questions should contact Craig Ryder at SussexFood cr89@sussex.ac.uk.
Further competitions will appear on the SussexFood Facebook page.
