New article on systemic risk in the European financial network attracts widespread media coverage
Dr Dimitrios Gounopoulos
A new article co-authored by Dr Dimtrios Gounopoulos (Reader in Accounting and Finance) and published in the Journal of Banking and Finance has received extensive media attention from the likes of the Guardian, the Daily Mail, Wall St Italia, HITC Business and the Irish Times.
The article - titled 'Transmission Channels of Systemic Risk and Contagion in the European Financial Network' and written with Nikos Paltalidis, Renatas Kizys (Portsmouth Business School) and Yiannis Koutelidakis (Fathom Consulting) - investigates 'systemic risk and how financial contagion propagates within the euro area banking system', demonstrating that 'the euro area banking system insists to be markedly vulnerable and conducive to systemic risks'.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, corresponding author Nikos Paltalidis said:
"The European banking system remains highly vulnerable and conducive to financial contagion, which implies that the policies designed to reduce systemic risk are not necessarily doing the job.
"The findings suggest we might need additional policies to better protect the Eurozone and increase the resilience of the financial system."
