Training
In your first year, you will attend a range of research methods training modules designed to equip you with the foundational skills and knowledge required to start your doctoral research. Building on this, in years 2 and 3 you will attend a range of advanced training modules specific to your particular needs. These will include workshops in writing up your thesis, presenting at academic conferences, and advanced data analysis.
You will also participate in the Department's annual Doctoral Student Conference, where you will gain experience in presenting your research to a wider audience.
All students undertake an annual Training Needs Analysis which enables us to identify and meet each student’s individual training needs. By the end of your period of study with us, you should have acquired all the skills you need to start your career in academia or industry.
Resources
Doctoral students at Sussex also benefit from access to the University’s Doctoral School and ESRC funded Doctoral Training Centre and all the resources they provide.
Research seminars
Through attending our regular research seminars and meetings, you will soon get to know faculty working in your area of interest.
Supervision
Each student is allocated at least two supervisors and you will meet regularly with them through each year of study. They will guide you in developing your topic, undertaking your data collection, and writing up your findings. In addition, all students participate in an annual review process involving a panel of academics in your field.
Conference attendance
We also provide our doctoral students with a sum of money each year which they can spend, in consultation with their supervisors and Course Convenor, on conference attendance or to assist with the costs of data collection. We expect all doctoral students to present their work at external conferences during their time with us.
