Brighton is about fifty miles south of London, and may be accessed from any of the four London airports.

  • The nearest airport is London Gatwick, from where there are frequent direct trains to Brighton. The trains run every 15 minutes, and the journey time is 30-35 minutes.
  • The transfer from London Heathrow is less convenient and the journey time is rather longer. National Express coaches run every hour via Gatwick airport, and the journey time is about 150 minutes. A printable timetable is available from the website.
  • The third possibility is London Stansted. From here, you will need to take the Stansted Express rail service to Tottenham Hale station, take the Victoria Line on the London Underground to Victoria station, and then transfer to a train to Brighton. The total journey time will be about three hours.
  • The final and most complicated possibility is London Luton. First you will need to take a bus from the airport to Luton Airport Parkway rail station, then a train to London St Pancras International, then the underground to London Bridge station, and finally transfer to a train to Brighton. The total journey time will be about three hours. There are also occasional trains direct from St Pancras to Brighton.

An alternative is to fly to Southampton airport. The airport rail station is Southampton Airport Parkway, and there are frequent trains every 30 minutes (most involving a change at Southampton Central) to Brighton. The journey time will be about 2 hours.

If you are coming from many cities in Continental Europe, a more pleasant (and possibly quicker) alternative to air travel would be to use Eurostar. You will need to alight in the UK at either London St Pancras or at Ashford International station, and then use local transport to travel to Brighton.

Travel by road

The University of Sussex is at Falmer on the A27 between Brighton and Lewes, about four miles (six kms) from the centre of Brighton. (Please follow signs for University of Sussex on the north side of the A27; the University of Brighton also has a campus at Falmer on the south side of the A27.) Visitors from London and the north should take the M23/A23 road towards Brighton. Before entering the centre of Brighton, join the A27 eastbound signposted Lewes. Drivers from the east or west take the A27 direct to the University. Car parking is available on the University campus for a modest charge (contact the conference administrator at eiba2012@sussex.ac.uk for details). Car parking in the centre of Brighton can be very expensive!

Visitors from Continental Europe might arrive at Dover by ferry or via the Channel tunnel, and should then drive on the A259 towards Hastings and Eastbourne, before joining the A27 towards Lewes and Brighton. Travel time from Dover to Brighton will be about 2 hours depending upon traffic conditions.

Information about train times and fares is available at www.thetrainline.com. There are frequent direct trains from London Victoria to Brighton. The trains run every 15 minutes, and the journey time is about 60 minutes. To reach the University, visitors should then take a local train (journey time is 8 minutes) from Brighton to Falmer station, which is directly opposite the University campus. Pedestrian access is through a subway under the A27 road – follow the signs for the University of Sussex (the University of Brighton also has a campus at Falmer).

Notes

  • It is generally possible to buy one train ticket from the airport to your destination, even if this involves changes.
  • It is generally cheaper to buy your train tickets in advance via the website.
  • It is generally cheaper to buy a return train ticket rather than two single tickets.
